About STEP 2004

The distinctive feature of STEP is its highly interactive workshop style which combines informed opinion with development of the understanding of best software practice.Up to 10 workshops (full-day and half-day) on selected topics will be conducted during STEP 2004. Each workshop reviews and extends a roadmap for software technologies with contributions on new development, practical experience, technology evaluation and gap analyses. Contributions are synthesized during debate and discussion and consolidated in a workshop report which updates the evolving roadmap. STEP is sponsored by the IEEE.

Workshop Focus and Topics

The focus of each workshop is to develop a technical roadmap for an area with an emphasis on practical applications. The workshop organizers will begin with a draft outline of the roadmap, and this will coalesce through the discussions.  Presentations will identify promising trends including their own work and experience reports. The workshop results will be folded into an overall roadmap of what is currently known, what works in practice, and where the gaps and challenges are. There will be STEP2004 proceedings published after the venue by IEEE CS Press.  The post workshop proceedings will include refereed extended workshop research papers and workshops results. The workshop topics include but are not limited to:

  • Software Engineering Education and Body of Knowledge
  • Software Analysis and Maintenance: Practices, Tools and, Interoperability
  • Evolution of Large Open Source Systems
  • User-Centered Adoption-Centric Reengineering
  • Extensible Development Environments
  • Grammar Engineering and Parser Technologies
  • Software Process
  • Formal Methods, Software Testing, Verification, and Validation
  • Component Based Engineering and Quality Assurance
  • Distributed Applications and Network-Centric Computing
  • EnterpriseArchitecture Integration

Workshop Proposals are Welcome

While a number of workshops are already planned for STEP 2004, there is room for several additional workshops.   Proposals are welcome for these additional workshops.  Prospective workshop chairs must submit a completed workshop proposal form and a 1500 words workshop position paper to qualify.   The STEP 2004 organizer committee will review applications and send invitations to qualified applicants within two weeks of receipt. Workshop proposals will be considered on a first-come-first-serve basis.  Workshop organizers are expected to select (or recruit) a small number of key papers for their workshops. Please submit your workshop proposals to step2004@swen.uwaterloo.ca. The deadline for workshop proposals is June 20, 2004.

Applications for Participation are Invited

STEP 2004 is a limited attendance, event that offers a unique opportunity to blend the perspectives of software practitioners and university researchers in the use of advanced software engineering practices. Prospective attendees must submit a completed application form to participate. Prospective attendees are also invited to submit a short position paper (up to 1500 words) for the workshop in which they are interested and contact the corresponding Workshop Chair.  The STEP 2004 organizer committee will review submissions and notify the authors within two weeks of receipt. Please submit your application for participation to step2004@swen.uwaterloo.ca. The deadline for Workshop Participation and Contributions is August 15, 2004.
